John Elway Hints at Tim Tebow Starting at Quarterback for the Broncos Next Season
One of the most interesting position battles heading into next season is whether Tim Tebow or Kyle Orton will be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. According to Broncos vice president of football operations John Elway, it appears the organization may be leaning towards the former Florida standout.
Elway recently told ESPN’s Ed Werder, “I think where we are as an organization, we are going with Tim” when discussing the team’s decision to spend the No. 2 pick in the 2011 NFL Draft on Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller instead of selecting a young quarterback. Over the last few weeks, Elways has discussed how intrigued he was with the amount of talented quarterbacks from this year’s draft class–making it seem like there was a slight chance the organization could end up taking a quarterback last Thursday night.
Orton led the league in passing yards at the beginning of last season, but Tebow also showed potential over the last three games of the 2010 season. As Tebow showed at Florida, he’s willing to do whatever it takes to be the best and realizes he has some flaws as an NFL quarterback–especially when it comes to his throwing motion.
While it seemed like Orton had the advantage at first, Elway’s recent comments makes it seem like the organization is leaning towards building the organization around Tebow. If this does happen to be true, it should be interesting to see if Denver tries to use Orton–who’s due about $8 million in 2011–as trade bait for teams in need of a quarterback.
